CNN has gone completely down the toilet the last couple of years. But today they took the next step and became genuinely dangerous.The problem started when CNN began breathlessly reporting on some kind of confrontation taking place on the Potomac River between the Coast Guard and an unknown vessel. The reports led to all sorts of chaos, including flights being halted at Ronald Reagan National Airport in D.C..
And of course things were exacerbated by the fact that this is the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
It soon emerged, however, that the Coast Guard was only performing routine exercises, not intercepting some Al Qaeda boat bent on destruction. Evidently, no one at CNN bothered to call the Coast Guard and ask them what was going on. Somebody saw something they thought was fishy, and CNN, having long since sacrificed all notions of journalistic responsibility in favor of sensationalism, just ran with it.
The goof was so serious that even The White House felt the need to make a statement scolding the network for being such assholes.
Of course, there's one question that remains to be answered: Why the fuck was the Coast Guard doing training exercises that involved shooting stuff on 9/11. They couldn't wait until 9/12? Or 9/14?
CNN, very dumb. The Coast Guard, pretty dumb. Sarah Palin, still dumber than both.
