Update: More On Paris

TMZ has confirmed what Crabbie guessed earlier - that Paris's "medical condition" was not physical but mental. Her quack psychiatrist Charles Sophy consulted with jail medical staff, and they determined that Paris was in danger of a complete nervous breakdown if she was not reassigned to house detention. Sheriff Lee Baca signed off on the deal, and now Paris is home.

By the way, an earlier poster provided a link to a public response form for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, and urged everyone to complain. I second that. Here's the link:

Meanwhile, it looks like "civil rights leader" Al Sharpton has decided to make Paris's predicament his latest vehicle for thrusting himself into the public eye (as if his lynching of Don Imus weren't enough for one year). Sharpton, rather predictably, is crying foul over Paris's release after three days for emotional stress. Said Sharpton in a statement:

Though I have nothing but empathy for Ms. Hilton whom I have met and appeared with on Saturday Night Live the night I hosted in 2003, this early release gives all of the appearances of economic and racial favoritism that is constantly cited by poor people and people of color. There are any number of cases of people who handle being incarcerated badly and even have health conditions that are not released.

I have served several sentences for civil rights and civil disobedience actions and I even fasted which caused health concerns to prison authorities who paid for a doctor to come see me daily rather than release me. This act smacks of the double standards that many of us raise.

And your words smack of the mock outrage so often unleashed by self-serving media whores who try to portray themselves as activists. Why don't you go inflame some more rioters Al, maybe you can get another innocent Jew murdered. Or maybe you should pick out another old fart radio host to launch a campaign against in the name of your own ego.

Update: Paris's release has unleashed an apparent shit-storm in Los Angeles County. Here's what L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe had to say about it:

This incident with Paris Hilton is just the most recent that highlights the problems our criminal justice system has with making sure sentences stick, whether it is in a County jail or under electronic monitoring.

Sounds like Don Knabe wants a better job than County Supervisor.

Also, a poster has provided a phone number for the L.A. Sheriff's Department:

Ring 'em up. I'm sure they'll love you.
