Lauren Graham: The World's Biggest Jerk

Crabbie has never watched Gilmore Girls. My understanding is that it's a witty, somewhat precious show about a young, unwed mother and her daughter who is old enough that they're more like sisters. Sounds like a vomit-fest. Anyway, the star of this show, something called Lauren Graham, is somewhat naively perceived by fans as a sweet, normal-type aw-shucks person who just happened to make it semi-big in show-biz. But as usual the reality doesn't live up to the perception. Because, at least according to Janet Charlton, Lauren Graham is a candidate for Queen of Asswaddery.

And what does it take to make it to the very top of the asswad heap? Basically, there is one qualification - you have to treat "regular" people as though they were tiny bits of dirt clinging to your sleeve. That's why Russell Crowe is such a major-league one, and Naomi Campbell, and any other celeb you can name who's gotten caught acting like king shit of turd mountain. And based on this story, Ms. Graham has moved right to the tippy-top of that smelly, fly-ridden pile.

Ms. Graham, according to someone who works on the Gilmore Girls program, has an almost pathological hatred of extras. She refuses to interact with them, turning her nose up at them like royalty scorning the hoi-polloi. And she has even been openly cruel to them. On one occasion, a young extra was eyeing a craft-services table, and Ms. Graham saw this and said, "Get these maggots away from the food table." To make matters worse, when some of the extras complained about Graham's assholish imperiousness, they were dismissed from their jobs.

Of course, it's easy to understand where this sort of behavior comes from. Graham, during her long climb up out of the slime of show-biz obscurity, was probably mistreated in a similar fashion by some big star. So now she thinks it's okay for her to turn around and act the same way. Certain people view fame not as the by-product of achievement, but an end unto itself, and one of the rewards of fame is that you're given license to treat certain people like crap. It takes enormous character to rise above such things, and not give in to the temptation of acting like a star just because you can. Ms. Graham is apparently sorely lacking in that kind of character.
