Friends of Britney Spears say the fading pop-princess got so depressed and lonely over the holidays that she resorted to conversing with Kevin Federline, and at one point during the telephone exchange, actually burst into tears and told him she missed him.
Federline, say Britney's friends, called on Christmas Day to say hello to the kids, and Britney took advantage of the opportunity to have a private conversation with him (which couldn't have been that private if we're finding out about it). "She told Kevin the holidays were hard and talking to him made things harder because she missed him," says one of Brit's chatty pals. "She was depressed over the holidays. At first, it was liberating for her to be free and single. But now she's in this big new house in Beverly Hills, and it's really lonely."
The source goes on to say that when Britney "first separated from Kev, she partied like crazy to numb the pain. Now the hurt is catching up with her."
Thank goodness for brother-booze, eh Britney?
